Costume is a vital part of Mine en scene and the music video according to Andrew Goodwin costume helps to create a certain image about the character and personality of the artist as well as portraying a certain image to the audience.
In order to put effective costumes we put together a wardrobe moodboard
When reviewing our audience feedback the main comments on costume were that individuality and 'retroness' was most appealing. The lead singers image is often most important but as we aren't featuring his face we need to make sure the costume was detailed and edgy enough to represent the bands persona and brand and peak audience interest.
The head piece was a major part of costume. We needed it to be circular, wearable and sun-like. I got hold of an old paper lantern and painted it the right yellow to match the singers shirt and guitar. During trials we discovered that the structure wasn't circular enough when put straight on, we fixed this by stuffing it with newspaper in order to keep a solid structure.
As the lead singer only featured in two locations, we only need two costumes, the main one being the performance costume as the other isn't in a well lit location and only has short screen time.
The other official member of The Front Bottoms is the drummer, so we designed the outfit to coordinate well with the singer by featuring orange and yellow tones. We also embroidered a peach onto the drummers hat as we aim to replicate this imagery throughout our advertisements. The costume is aimed to resonate with the bands theme but maintain the casual laid-back image of the alternative rock genre.
FINAL CASTING & COSTUME
We want our video to be fun and relatable to our target audience, so the main requirements for each cast member was for them to be young and not take themselves seriously/ be confident so the video feels natural.
